It is indeed a ring, can you make out any details from the full size image?

The ringed bird is a Herring Gull and the smaller gull to the left is a Black-headed Gull but the juvenile bird at the back looks like a Lesser Black-backed Gull; note the "masked" appearance at the eye, mostly dark centered tertials ans appearance of a dark bar on the secondary coverts, all features of Lesser lack-back (will double check when I see the full res image)

It's realy interesting finding out about these birds, last year I got details from two marked Knot at Ruddon's Point in Fife which were ringed in northern Norway and were staging from their breeding grounds in Canada and Greenland, the ringer was very pleased as they were the first birds seen in the UK from his study, interesting stuff keep a look out for any marked birds (will look out some images of variously marked birds and post them, so you know what to look for)cheers, John
