It's a Dunnock Peter!










Only joking - I reckon that it's a bigger bird than a Linnet, and would say that it's a Redwing (the apparently obvious dark centres to the wing coverts seems strange though).

Plenty of them around so it would make sense but it just sat there and didn't fly off until I looked away so this is all I saw of it.

yes hedge sparrow it is. best regards mac. no you can see the flash near the eye ? and a bit big for prunella modularis

I agree with Roy, I think it is a redwing. The "obvious dark centres to the wing coverts", in my opinion, are a trick of the light because the photos are a bit over-exposed. Everything else seems perfect for redwing (e.g. prominent supercillium and moustachial stripe, the orange bill with black tip, red patch under the wing). Lovely birds!
