Default Mediterranean Gulls

I often see black headed gulls, but have never seen a med gull.

Or have I?

Anyone able (and willing!) to post an id guide to help me spot the differences?

Mike Thrower has quite a good album on Med Gull ID. Should be easy found in 'All Album's'. If it is comparison shots (with Black-headed's) then let me know I'm sure I can dig some out for you.

I saw my first Med Gull this year Stuart.......once you start looking they are quite easy to spot........unlike many of the other Gull vareties!
Mike's pics here are well worth studying.....good luck!

Thanks all.

I've look at Mike's pictures, and I suspect the problem lies with my ignorance rather than the birds, but they all just look like black-headed gulls to me; if I saw any of them in the field, unless they were side by side with a black headed gull I don't think I'd stand a chance of an id.

What I'm really looking for is pointers towards the differences between the two, rather than pictures. Maybe comparison pictures is what I need.

Put a copy of this book on your xmas list Stuart........it gives great Gull comparisons as well as being a superb all round birdguide!

Sorry to be a party pooper Ruth but I have the Collins bird guide and in my opinion it's the best bird book around. But the link you put in is the current version of the book which is great. But the new second edition version is due out towards the end of November in hardback and the paperback version in January so it could be worth waiting. And I agree with you on the Gull comparisons by the way. Maybe I should have put this thread in the bird book section. Heres the link:Collins Bird Guide: Amazon.co.uk: Lars Svensson, Killian Mullarney, Dan Zetterstrom, Peter J. Grant: Books
