Default Chiffchaff or Willow Warbler

Hi all,

I took this today at Marton Mere in Blackpool and can't decide on the ID. I think it is probably Chiffchaff, but am hoping for Willow Warbler. The reason I'm hoping for Willow is because of the yellowish tinge on the belly, but this could just be reflected light. The primaries are obscured and because of the strong light, I can't determine the leg colour either. Annoyingly I can't recall with 100% certainty the song either.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Alan

It's a Chiffchaff, you can see enough of the primary tip to see it is short, the supercilium is also dull and indistinct and the legs are dark. In spring Chiffchaff do show a variable yellow ting so that doesn't rule out Chiffchaff I'm afraid, it's usually much more obvious on Willow Warbler though

Cheers, John

Chiffchaff then - they're everywhere now. I'd never seen one up until 5 weeks ago, now I can't stop seeing them, not that I mind.

Thanks everyone,

Regards,

Alan
