I would go for:
1 Herring gull winter adult
2 GBB gull 3rd winter
3 GBB gull 2nd winter
But like everyone else gulls are not my strong point could be completely wrong.

Hi Bassist
Well your comments have made myday apart from the normal run of the mill birds i don't have a clue either; its that bad i have just had to go on the RSPB site to check out what a woodcock looks like and as for the spotted fly catcher i feel like I have just seen something from another planet.

Tell me please one of you clued up experts don't these birds exsist around Manchester.
regards Mike

Spot on. I think the brilliant bit about this website is that it makes you look and check out these things regularly. I've learnt so much by reading posts and comments.

When I first saw the Woodcock I thought Snipe, then ooh, not sure. So I checked and found out what I should be looking for.

If you don't get that much time in the field, or get unusual birds banging into your windows that often, this website will help hone up your skills!

Thanks to all who contribute and long may it continue!

Woodcock are not uncommon around Gtr Manchesters rural woodlands but seeing them can be difficult, the best time of year is spring when (with luck) you can see males "roding" at dusk over woods. The only place I've seen them in the Manchester area is Etherow Park but that is my local patch so you'd expect it.
Spotted Flycatcher also can be seen at any number of sites in Manchester (though declining) and again in open woodlands. Or you could try Neils back garden he's got tons of em.
