I thought the extra clarity that John's reply provided was quite helpful. Mind you, I've only ever seen one (lesser Redpoll) and so the distinction has been unnecessary so far

When you get up here or on the Islands of Scotland you will bump into differant races of Mealy Redpoll in winter Months, with very big dark ones from Greenland mixed with the Northern European race.

REMEMBER: MEALY IS THE COMMON REDPOLL (but not common)
And LESSER: IS THE BRITISH RACE (which are common )
