Default Abu Dhabi - terns

Spent some time on the site shoreline today. There were quite a few terns about, fishing very successfully. Managed a few reasonable pics but couldn't get a decent one of a tern coming up with a fish. Thoroughly enjoyed watching their kamikaze-like dives.

Nice pics Ian, I don't recall seeing a single Tern while out there. They obviously didn't come up to that end of the city.

They seem to have started increasing in numbers over the last week, Peter. I'm sure they'll turn up (no pun intended, honest) near the Emirates Palace and the Corniche also.
Few more pics attached.

They certainly are Judith. There were a few little terns showing today but no photo opportunity. I wonder if anyone can ID the terns in my pics. I'm only really certain on one of the species in the photos.

Took some other tern pics yesterday as well as the Gull-billed Tern including a couple of Lesser-crested Terns. In all I observed 5 types of tern - Gull-billed, Lesser-crested, Caspian, White-cheeked and Little.

Pics of Lesser-crested Tern below:

This Caspian Tern posed for me yesterday. Note how heavy its bill is.

The bird posed well for you Ian! I have seen a Caspian Tern in the Algarve, they stick out like a sore thumb with the size of their bill! A smart looking Tern!

They are larger than other terns also - nearly as big as some of the large gulls
