Thanks Merlin - you obviously posted just as I was uploading the further pic. Managed to confirm it on UAE Birding site.

I'm going to India in April with a bit of luck I'll see one in the flesh.

They were having a right good feed on the grass seedheads. Hope you get as good views as I did. I'm sure you'll see plenty of interesting birds and wildlife out there. Hope you have a great time.

It certainly looks like you had good views and got some good pics too. We're going out for the Tigers but I'll still be birdwatching I can't help it. Wife keeps giving me a smack for birdwatching while driving, suppose she's right really.

Just had a look at your UAE birding site, what do you think about these dyed Silverbills, are they escapees or has someone caught them dyed them and released them. There seems quite a few of them and in different colours ? See them here for those who haven't seen them yet.

Probably escapees. Apparantly they are kept as captives over in India and Pakistan.

Lucky enough to get a boat trip out from the construction site today. It proved to be a flamingo, cormorant and heron fest. Saw a few waders also and a colony of terns (don't know which). There was a brief glimpse of a raptor over the mangroves but I had no chance to ID or photograph it.

A few pics attached.
