Large Bird of Prey Spotted - 2008/01/27 17:08 Hi there,

I live in the Northeast of England in a small town near Durham. We have alot of open fields, farmland and woodland around the area and I know there are many kestrels around, but this morning I saw a very large bird of prey which was at least 4 times larger than a kestrel.

The bird was brown in appearance and had what looked to be white stripes on it's wings - I've spent this morning looking around the net at british birds of prey and the only bird which looks remotely like it is the golden eagle - which I immediately thought seemed highly unlikely (I thought they were only resident in Scotland and RSPB protected areas in the Lake District???)

It's driving me nuts now, I wanna know what this bird was!

Re:Large Bird of Prey Spotted - 2008/01/28 06:41 Hi, the bird you saw will almost certainly be a Buzzard. They have a variable amount of white showing on the underwing and quite frequently looks like a stripe along the wing. When soaring they fly in wide circular patterns but profile can change dramaticaly when gliding with wings held more backswept.
Below is a bird I photographed a few years ago, remember that the white on the wing is variable and changes with light conditions, distance from the bird and wing angle.

Cheers, John

Re:Large Bird of Prey Spotted - 2008/01/29 03:15 Don't know what fills my heart with joy the most on that picture, The beautiful Buzzard (of which we see many on our regular jaunts to the Isle of Bute) or the lovely clear blue sky which is indeed a rarity!!
