Unidentified flock 150+ - 2008/02/21 22:28 Hello,
I'm in the South of Ireland, more specifically North Cork, and about 40kms from the coast, though beside a river.
Over the past week a big (150+)flock of birds has appeared, high in the sky. Hard to get a good look at. They fly in various groups and formations, V, U, etc., and then disperse, circle around, mix it up, reform, and split again. This can go on for half an hour, all the while I can hear them calling. They sound quite like curlews, though I have not heard the distinct curlew call, but same pitch etc.. They also seem to be curlew shape and size, though they are so far I cannot see their beaks, certainly they sound like waders, as far as I know.
Would anybody have an idea. I will try to attatch a photo of a formation example, though like I said, they don't seem to stick to anything they form.

Re:Unidentified flock 150+ - 2008/02/21 22:31 Sorry again, I forgot to mention that their wing beats are very rapid. That's it!

Re:Unidentified flock 150+ - 2008/02/24 18:12 It's very difficult to say from the image, would it be possible to send the full size image to me at clydebirds@lycos.co.uk and I will see if I can positively ID them

Cheers, John

Re:Unidentified flock 150+ - 2008/02/26 03:15 The birds in the picture are Curlews, Rebel Tern sent me a full size copy of one of the images and when the image was enhanced you can just make out the bill on one of the birds, all the other details mentioned suggested Curlew but it's always prudent to be sure.

Cheers, John

Re:Unidentified flock 150+ - 2008/02/26 18:49 Thanks again John. Last night I heard the distinct curlew call, so they are still hanging around. I did not realise that curlews came inland (40kms) though this is a river valley. Do you know why they would be here, as opposed to sticking to the coastal estuaries? Are they going back and forth every morning and evening?
I love curlews, don't they have the most beautiful call, haunting.
