flock in the field - 2008/01/22 18:43 Hello, I am in the South of Ireland, County Cork. There is a flock of smallish (song thrush/starling sized) birds, about thirty of them, who seem to be feeding on the pasture. They are disturbed and take flight very easily and I have not been able to get a good visual identification. They have very rapid wing beats and always retreat to a tall tree. A large part of the flock rise when disturbed with others following one by one. They are brown in colour, at first I thought they might be juvenile starlings, but am unsure. Would anyone have an idea as to what they are?
I know the information is vague, but perhaps the size of the flock and habit of being in the field is an indicator? Thank you.

Re:flock in the field - 2008/01/22 22:31 Hi Rebel Tern

From your description they are almost certainly Starlings. The actions and behaviour you describe are all habits common to Starlings, the only other birds they would likely to be are winter thrushes (Redwing & Fieldfare), they would show paler underparts and the wing beats aren't as quick as Starlings, when thrushes fly they don't tend to flock as closely together the way Starlings would

I'm pretty sure they are Starlings though

Cheers, John

Re:flock in the field - 2008/03/08 06:08 After finally having a good look at the flock, I have identified them as Redwing, and possibly some other thrushes aswell.
The Starlings are in fine form, doing Curlew impressions, nice one, a bit of coast in the valley.
