Please help....what is this bird? - 2008/07/31 04:34 Hi all,

There has been a bird sat on the roof opposite my apartment in Birmingham city centre every night for the past 4 nights (it does not appear to be around earlier than dusk). I'm not a bird expert by any means so it could be something very mundane, but anything that isn't a pigeon or a seagull is a rarity around here!

The bird is quite large (much larger than a pigeon) with an exclusively dark grey plume. From what I can see there are no markings or flashes of other colours at all. It has quite an upright stance with a fairly long neck and beak. Although I have not seen it fly, it has flapped its wings, which are long and have a big bend in them., but again, has no markings or other colouration

The noise it makes is high-pitched and shrill, almost like a whistle or air being expelled from a balloon.

I have tried to take photos, which although aren't very good, as have been taken at dusk, may help, but I can't seem to load them on to here, I think the files are too big. If anyone thinks they might be able to help I would be happy to send the files.

I've tried quite a few of these online identifiers with no success. Can anyone help identify my little evening visitor?

Thanks!
