Bluetit Puzzle - 2007/03/12 19:11 We have a pair of tits nesting in a box on the rear of our bungalow, and the one I think to be the male has been puzzling me for days.

The nest box is positioned to the right of a window and on the left side is a large evergreen bush. The bird spends hours every day flying from the bush, into the window about two feet away, before dropping to the sill and looping back to do the same circuit over again.

This goes on for hours, from early morning until the light fades.

Has anyone got an explanation for this please?

Re:Bluetit Puzzle - 2007/03/13 15:37 Hiya!
Can he see his reflection? He may be trying to chase a rival male (his own reflection)away from his domain.Blue Tits fight like crazy and I have seen them locked in battle oblivious to anything that goes on around them! An old name for the Blue Tit is 'Billy-Biter'!
All the very best,

Re:Bluetit Puzzle - 2007/03/13 18:10 Hi Reg,

Thanks for the reply, that's an interesting idea, I hadn't thought of that one. If the babies hatch, he'll be a wreck trying to feed them all and fight with himself too!

Thanks again, all the best,
Chris P.

Re:Bluetit Puzzle - 2007/09/02 05:34 We had the exact same behaviour from a male Blue tit during nesting earlier in the year and the best idea we could come up with was to attach a net curtain - for fear of the bird injuring himself.
This worked perfectly and one of the resultant chicks came back to roost in another nest box we'd set up as you can see from the pic below.
