Re:crows - again - 2008/02/16 18:21
I definatly belive rooks/crows have a laugh. I'm always watching rooks, and am fascinated by them. It seems to me that there are always shennanigans going on in the rookery and beyond. And also great tenderness and affection. I would love to know more about them. I wonder does anybody know of a good book focusing on the habits and social order of rooks etc.? Here in North Cork there was a famous battle of the birds. This battle was between starlings and rooks (starlings started it!). The starlings approached a massive rookery here, in their thousands and attacked the rooks. They came everyday with reinfrocements and battles ensued. After a week rooks began to fly in from all directions, don't know from how far afield, thousands of them reinforced the rookery. When the starlings arrived for battle that day the rooks ascended and took to flying in regimental formations. They did not fight back enmass but held strong. Eventually the starlings were exhausted and began to collapse out of the sky. The rooks were triumphant. There must have been alot of communication, and organisation in order to enforce the tactic decided upon.
