Squirrel and bird table problem - 2006/09/03 19:58 I have a raised bird table in garden but the seed/nuts etc put for birds being "hoovered up" by squirrels.

Have you a device that prevents them climbing the wooden central support pole?

Or any advice with regards to limiting squirrel access to feeding platform?

Please help!

Re:Squirrel and bird table problem - 2006/09/04 12:10 I find squirrels are a real pest in my garden and I've had continual running battles with them to stop them eating the expensive bird food I put out for the birds. They really are just tree rats!!

I've tried various anti-squirrels devices, such as baffles, obstacles, coating etc which didn't work.

Since I can't bring myself round to shoot these pesky animals with a .22 air rifle, I now use a trap, which allows me to catch the squirrel and move it away.

Some people don’t approve of this, and I believe you can be prosecuting for moving squirrels, but not for shooting them.

I still kept getting squirrels coming to my garden and I wasn't sure if it the same one returning time and time again. A blob of paint now harmlessly marks up new squirrel catches for my own peace of mind.

Anyone else tried this squirrel trap tactic?

Re:Squirrel and bird table problem - 2006/09/10 19:23 Hi Jamest,

Did you try to upload an image of this POW camp or link to it?

I'd be interested to hear more about the feeders you used. Were they the same or two different ones?

The Gardman Guaranteed Squirrel Proof Peanut Feeder seems to reckon it's the nuts!

Designed to defeat the most determined squirrels this guaranteed squirrel proof peanut feeder is a must if you want to feed wild birds in your garden when they live alongside squirrels.

The feeder must be located where squirrels can only approach from above, and then the squirrels bodyweight will lower a protective sleeve over the peanuts in order to save them for the birds.

It's guaranteed so might be worth a try.

It's in the bird feeder category in the bird directory...

See what you think.

Re:Squirrel and bird table problem - 2008/03/08 21:51 try putting a cage around your feeders . the little birds will be able to get through but the larger things like pigeons and squirrels won't
