attracting birds to the garden - 2006/11/04 20:42 what is the best way to attract birds to the garden - we only seem to get seagulls and some magpies when we put bird food out and they don't even touch the slugs and snails. Also are there any birds which like slugs and snails and visit scotland and how do we attract them to the garden? http://www.promomat.biz - handmade pewter birds and mounted photos - made in Scotland

Re:attracting birds to the garden - 2006/12/03 14:54 well...

Thrushes and any member of the family turdus are always your main slug/snail munchers...

Have you tried placing the food in cages/feeders? (that may sound daft, but a lot of people do place food in the open making it easy for corvids and other "scavengers")

Try using the fat balls in the mesh nets, you may just get Starlings to begin with in the wintertime, but as the other birds find the titbits they will come along.

Another way is to make it difficult for the larger birds by placing your offerings near a fence or hedge, making it harder for those with large wingspans to get to the grub!

Hope this helps
