Crows dunking bread - 2006/04/08 07:53 We have a pair of crows who spend a lot of time in our garden. We often see them dipping dry bread into our bird bath in order to soften it before eating, a bit like dunking a biscuit in tea I suppose.

I know Crows are intelligent birds and I was wondering if anyone else has seen anything similar?

Re:Crows dunking bread - 2006/09/17 00:03 I first saw this behaviour a few years ago with Magpies, Neil.

One came into our garden and tried to eat a very dried up piece of bread. A few minutes later another one appeared, took the bread, dropped it into the birdbath for a couple of minutes before eating it. The first one watched in utter amazement before trying it out himself and from then on every Magpie has repeated this party piece,so I imagine it's really like us, learned behaviour.

Also the Crow family are pretty intelligent you only have to see them waiting for cars to pass before dashing into the road to pick up stray scraps!

At the WWT centre, London, they put wire 'cages' over the nests of Little Ringed Plovers. This stops the Crows from taking the eggs but they have learned to sit on top of the 'cages' and stamp their feet. The young LRP's panic and run out .............I wonder how long it took the Crows to figure that one out! All the very best,

On a lighter note we found a half dead mouse on our back doorstep one morning. It had bee savaged by a cat and was on its last legs.

We put it in a shoe box with some sawdust and water to see if it would revive - it didn't make it so a simple burial was mooted.

A little while later I spotted a crow flying away from the house with a little bundle in its beak.

Somehow the crow had found the mouse and made off with it.

The mouse didn't die in vein!
