unidentified bird - red/brown back to head - 2007/07/23 20:04
Spotted a bird I could not identify at Fairlop Waters in NE London. About 25cm(?), mostly plain light brown with no especially noticable markings but a distinctive reddish brown crown and back of neck. Longish beak. As it flew away I saw a white flash at its short tail. Had quite a loud cry 'eeee', 'eeee', 'eeee'. My thought was some sort of plover but I can't find anything with the red head markings.
Fairlop Waters is open grass, scrub with a lake.
Any ideas?
