Blogs will never replace a good field guide, unless you take detailed notes in the field (which is a good way to learn)or a photo (which can be misleading depending on image quality); your mind can play tricks on what you had actualy seen, especially if it's some time before you get to a computer.
A book can fit in your pocket and be taken out with you
