Its like a Great Tit but..... - 2007/11/20 06:20 Hi There,

Someone just spotted this in Hampshire and asked me what it is.

Its got me stumped ! Apparently flies in a flock with other tits.

Any ideas ?

Cheers

Tim

Re:Its like a Great Tit but..... - 2007/11/21 09:40 The bird in the photo is a Blue Tit (identified by shape, small bill and plumage details), if the image hasn't been manipulated the bird has an aberrant plumage. It does sometimes happen; when a bird has abnormal colour pigmentation resulting in albinism (partially or totally white), Leucism (results in pale looking bird, lacking dark pigments) or melanism (partially or totally dark birds)

Cheers, John

Re:Its like a Great Tit but..... - 2007/11/22 16:45 Interesting that you suggested it may have been manipulated - which is easy to do today.

I can see it's on a birdbath with strong lighting to the left, which is strange as usually you'd have a flash which would shadow behind.

Perhaps the photographer could give us a bit more information to clarify.

I initially looked for wires and a "Made in China" label without success!!

Re:Its like a Great Tit but..... - 2007/11/23 05:32 You sceptical bunch !

The bird has been postively identified (from this & a couple of other photos) by a wildlife advisor at the RSPB ..."This is quite an unusual individual because it is a melanistic blue tit and because this is a very rare genetic aberration, it explains the large size of this bird. The beak is also atypically large but the proportions are clearly those of a blue tit rather than a great tit."

Regards

Tim

Re:Its like a Great Tit but..... - 2007/11/23 08:33 Hi Tim

Unfortunately in this day and age it is very easy to manipulate images and it is something to be wary off. Most people I find are very genuine but I have come across a few who weren't.
I would be interested in seeing the other images if that would be possible, I would also be interested in knowing who the RSPB Wildlife Adviser was, I have never heard of any genetic abberation of Blue Tit's making them particularly larger than others, it would be interesting to find out what information is available for such birds.
The bird was obviously a Blue Tit but didn't realise there was a size issue involved

Cheers, John

Re:Its like a Great Tit but..... - 2007/11/26 03:07 ...the plot thickens!

I agree. With this modern technology you do have to ask the question.

As for you Tim, I can see you are genuine and have followed it up and solved the mystery. Thumbs up!

Have you seen it again?

Gerry.
