Yellow Wagtail - 2008/01/05 21:38 Hi everyone, I am new to the forum nd quite new to Bird Watching. I have always had an interest in British Wildlife but never really taken it too seriously until now.

This morning I saw a beautiful bird that I wasnt too sure what it was. There was only one thing that gave it away really and it was the fact its tail was wagging (well bouncing up and down). the face and the underside of the bird was a wonderful yellow colour and the wings looked brown and it had a long tail.

I had a quick look on the internet and it seems to be a Yellow Wagtail but I was wondering what it is doing here in January? Is it normal to see these birds at this time of year?

I live in an end terrace house with a yard and we get no wildlife at all in there. So you can imagine what a nice surprise it was to see this bird today.

Re:Yellow Wagtail - 2008/01/07 22:48 Hi Blue

It's more likely to be a 1st winter or winter plumage adult Grey Wagtail (the males loose the black bib in winter), they are similar to yellow wagtails but tend to be more grey brown on the back and are longer tailed.
The habitat would also suggest a Grey Wagtail, Yellow Wagtails would be more likely to turn up on open fields (although they wont get here for another couple of months at least as they are summer visitors).

Hope this helps, and welcome to the forum

Regards, John

Re:Yellow Wagtail - 2008/01/08 06:58 Hi there, thanks very much for your reply.

I had another look on the internet and it certainly looks more like the Yellow Wagtail than the Grey but saying that, I am no bird expert and you seem to know more about birds than I do.

It was a very pretty bird and the colours were lovely. The yellow was stunning but its wings looked quite short.

Whatever it was, whether it was a Yellow or a Grey, it was a delight to have something so beautiful in my yard!

I have seen plenty of the pied ones, they seem to get everywhere but never seen one like this before.

Thanks again for your response
