What was it? - 2006/05/06 00:36 I am not a bird watcher, but the other day I saw a bird that really got me intrigued, as I have never seen it before, and my twitching friend could not identify it from my (poor) description.
I wonder if anyone could help.
I would say it was about 20cm long, and fairly slim. The back was a uniform milk-chocolatey brown, getting lighter on the chest and tummy. The striking features were a bright red oval spot on the top of the head with two black vertical bars starting behind the red spot either side of the head, and black/red/black bars on the folded wings. I did not notice the colour of the beak and feet, nor the length of the tail, although I think I would have noticed if it had been particularly long.
I saw it about a week ago and it was standing on the ground in somebody's front garden. I live in the Surrey Hills in the countryside near Guildford.
If anyone has any idea about what bird this could be, I would be very grateful to hear it!
Yours ignorantly and hopefully.
