Wierd colouration. - 2006/04/14 13:00 I was riding my bike along The Greenway, which runs from the Thames Barrier to Wick Lane in East London. Just as I was passing the cemetary at Hermit Road (City of London Cemetary, Plaistow.) I noticed a blackbird with white markings around it's neck. The marking's were about 4mm at their thickest, and were about 15mm long, covering the side of the neck, with a gap between each one, made up of the normal coloured feathers. The beak was not yellow, which prompted me to go search for any other pictures like the bird I saw. (At the moment, on The Greenway, the City of London Cemetary are replacing the fence, as it has become ingrown with tree's, with the tree's having been cut away from the metal barred fence they were growing through.) Can anyone verify what bird I saw? (It was not tame, but did not move too far from my line of travel, hopping from the outside of the chopped logs and branches, to the middle of the pile, being visible to me at all times, knowing I was not stopping, had I have stopped, it would have gone.)

This sighting happened at approx 1900h, Thursday 13th, April, 2006. (Yesterday.)

Re:Wierd colouration. - 2006/06/06 20:45 Most likely a ringed ouzel. Was this what you were looking at?

Re:Wierd colouration. - 2007/11/16 21:52 Sounds more like a partial albino Blackbird, this is quite common in this species. Ring Ouzel would not show a gap between the white patches on the neck, it would be a continuous white band across the throat and onto the neck. 1st year male Blackbirds have a dark bill which can stay dark until well into it's first summer and also if the bird has been foraging in muddy ground the bill can be dirty and appear darker

Cheers, John

Re:Wierd colouration. - 2008/01/29 03:08 We had a blackbird with a white patch down its neck. Lived in our garden for years, then one day climbed up to clear out my guttering and found it dead in there. Gutted!
