Re:what is this bird? (with picture) - 2008/05/16 05:43 Would it be some kind of Flycatcher? It did fly out to snap up a fly, and return to the same perch.

The bird in the picture is a Spotted Flycatcher

Cheers, John

Re:what is this bird? (with picture) - 2008/05/17 05:44 Thanks a million John. It seemed so much paler in the book, does it become darker at certain stages of the season, or is it a male/female difference?
Great...thanks again.

Re:what is this bird? (with picture) - 2008/05/17 16:24 It really depends on the light you see them in; in the shade they can look much darker than they appear in bright light conditions. Books do tend to show them a bit paler than they would actually appear in the field, the plumage does fade as the summer progresses though.

I have attached (I hope) an image of one taken by my friend in Fife

Re:what is this bird? (with picture) - 2008/05/17 18:50 That's interesting John, I have to be a bit more flexible so with identifying by plummage. Leaving the perch to snap up a fly and returning was a dead giveaway I suppose. That's a lovely photo your friend took. Thanks again.
