crows - again - 2006/10/26 13:25 Several years ago my wife & I witnessed the following: two crows on an overheard wire; one suddenly fell forward, wings outstretched and hung for some few seconds upside down. It then dropped off the wire & leisurely flew off, and the second one followed. I reported this to my local wildlife club and the annual report later stated that such behaviour had been reported a few times in the past. No'one seems to know the reason, unless you believe that birds, like some mammals, just like to have fun sometimes.

Re:crows - again - 2008/02/16 18:21 I definatly belive rooks/crows have a laugh. I'm always watching rooks, and am fascinated by them. It seems to me that there are always shennanigans going on in the rookery and beyond. And also great tenderness and affection. I would love to know more about them. I wonder does anybody know of a good book focusing on the habits and social order of rooks etc.?
Here in North Cork there was a famous battle of the birds. This battle was between starlings and rooks (starlings started it!). The starlings approached a massive rookery here, in their thousands and attacked the rooks. They came everyday with reinfrocements and battles ensued. After a week rooks began to fly in from all directions, don't know from how far afield, thousands of them reinforced the rookery. When the starlings arrived for battle that day the rooks ascended and took to flying in regimental formations. They did not fight back enmass but held strong. Eventually the starlings were exhausted and began to collapse out of the sky. The rooks were triumphant.
There must have been alot of communication, and organisation in order to enforce the tactic decided upon.
